1. Question:

1.1: A user wants to import their Solidworks model into Lumion.

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch.

As you are probably aware, Solidworks is not an officially supported app. This, unfortunately, implies the possible occurrence of unexpected behaviour when working with Lumion.

Lumion supports the following file formats for imported 3D models: .DAE, .FBX, .MAX, .3DS, .OBJ, .DWG, .DXF. The short version of the answer is that you need to export your file in one of these formats.

With the above being mentioned, there isn't a clear path on how to get your model from SolidWorks into Lumion.

Here are a few options available (long version):

1. Get the Simlab FBX exporter for Solidworks plugin. Please note it isn't a free plugin. But with this plugin, it should be straightforward. Export the model to .FBX and import it into Lumion.

2. Open or import the SolidWorks project in AutoCAD. Then export as 3D .DWG and import it into Lumion. (This was suggested by a user back in 2014)

3. Save the SolidWorks project as an .STL file. Import it into Blender, it is a free model tool comparable to 3DS Max and Maya. Then export it as .FBX or .DAE and import it into Lumion.
See the first nine minutes of this tutorial on how to get the model into Lumion and fix and/or improve the model. After that step, the user would export the model instead of setting up the render in Blender.

Blender can be downloaded here:

4. Solidworks can export to IFC. SketchUp imports IFC.

Whether any of those give a clean model to Lumion would need your testing. I couldn't find any post from users that did try this pipeline.

These were the steps I could find. Steps 3 and 4 were suggested a long time ago. Maybe there are better ways to get models from SolidWorks to Lumion nowadays.

I hope this clears things up.
